Subject : 2003-2005MY Mazda 6 potential MIL illumination at I/M test
This is to inform I/M administrators and technicians of a potential problem that may cause the MIL to
illuminate when inspecting certain 2003-2005 model year Mazda6 vehicles. Mazda has developed a
software fix to address this problem and the affected vehicles will be repaired (i.e., ECM and TCM
reprogrammed) whenever an owner brings the vehicle to the dealer. A brief description of the problem is
provided below and further details can be found in the attached Service Bulletin (Reference No.
01-024/05).
Problem Description
2003-2004 MY Mazda6 (2.3L and 3.0L) and 2005 MY Mazda6 (2.3L only) vehicles use the ISO 15765-4
CAN protocol for communication during an I/M OBD inspection. When these vehicles are inspected, the
MIL may be illuminated (and a communication-related DTC stored in the ECM or TCM), if disconnection
occurs at the Data Link Connector (DLC) on one of the two pins used for CAN communication.
Mechanism of the MIL Illumination
A loss of one connection at the DLC can occur when the scan tool is unplugged or “wiggled-out” and can
cause an interruption in data being transmitted among ECUs (ECM/TCM/ ABS/HEC). If such an
interruption occurs, the OBD II system detects a communication- related malfunction(s) and illuminates the
MIL.
